Lasal Jayawardena of Lyceum Nugegoda, representing Sri Lankan Team won a bronze medal at the Asian Cup Chess competition held in Jiaxing, Shanghai, China from 5th to 12th November, 2016.
Sri Lanka achieved equal second place in the event on par with the strong Chinese team, however placed 3rd as per the tie break. This achievement is regarded as a turning point in Sri Lankan chess. It appears that we are in the reach of a medal in the world level in the near future.
Lasal has also shown outstanding performance at the “ Commonwealth Chess Championship 2016.” He became the 6th in under 14 open category having beaten many strong players representing the commonwealth union.
The event was held at Citrus hotel – Waskaduwa in August, 2016.
We congratulate Lasal and hope that he will endeavor to perform at his best in future events and bring glory to Lyceum Nugegoda.
The Inter International Under 17 Cricket Tournament was organized by Wicherley International School, Colombo from 03rd to 24th October, 2016 at Shalika and Health Grounds, Colombo. Lyceum Wattala played against British School , Stafford International School and Gateway College, Kandy in the preliminary rounds and against Colombo International School (CIS), Colombo in the Quarter Finals. CIS batted first and bowled out for 72 runs in 24.1 overs. In return, Lyceum Wattala scored 75 runs in 4 overs. At the Semi Finals Lyceum Wattala was bowled out for 117 runs in 26 overs against OKI Wattala which gained 68 runs in 25.1 overs.
Due to bad weather the final match between Lyceum Wattala and Lyceum Nugegoda could not be played and both teams were awarded Joint Champions.
UCMAS (Abacus and Mental Arithmetic System) celebrated their 5th National Competition on 2nd October , 2016 at BMICH with 1020 students from various districts from Franchisee centers.
Siluni Walakuluarachchige from Lyceum Nugegoda had completed her target of 200 sums in eight minutes and won the National Champion award. She will be attending the International Competition 2016 which will be held in November, 2016 in Dubai. We wish her good luck.
Taanawee Pathirennahe of Grade 6D in Lyceum International School, Ratnapura, was awarded the Best Actress’ Award in the Open Category of the above festival, held at the National Youth Auditorium, Maharagama on 14th October 2016. The festival was jointly organized by the Department of Cultural Affairs and the State Advisory Board of Drama and chaired by Hon. S.B. Nawinna, Minister of Internal Affairs, Wayamba Development Affairs and Cultural Affairs.
Taanawee Pathirennahe was adjudged the Best Child Actress, for her role played superbly in the drama ‘’Penguin’’ (directed by Nilanka Namal Udumulla) as a baby penguin that positively changes the mind of its fellow penguins and the preying sea-lion, using love and kindness as weapons.
Right along Taanawee’s 6-year career at Lyceum International School, Ratnapura, she has shown, remarkable stage talents in singing, cultural dancing and acting, in addition to her studies.

Versatile swimmer, Ushan Avishka Gunaratne of Lyceum International School, Ratnapura, was placed second (Silver Medal) in 200m Medley Relay, and third (Bronze Medals) in both 100m Butterfly Stroke and 50m Butterfly Stroke at the South Asian Aquatic Championship Meet - 2016, held in Sugathadasa Swimming Complex, Colombo, from 18th to 23rd October 2016.
Ushan had previously represented Sri Lanka at the 5th Asian Schools Swimming Championship - 2016, in Indonesia and the 8th Asian Age Group Championship - 2016 and came within the best 8 (finalist) in the former. In 2016, he made an Island Record in 100m Butterfly Stroke (59.79) at Sri Lanka Schools Age Group Aquatic Championship - 2016. He has been placed first in 100m and 50m Butterfly Stroke (his favourites) in many provincial meets since 2012. He also made two records in 100m and 50m at the International Schools Aquatic Championship of the TISSL ( The International Schools of Sri Lanka ) group.
In addition to swimming, he has performed well in several other school activities.
